The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Jurisdiction of Nebraska, was instituted at Lebanon on July 8,1900. The charter was granted by Grand Master O.O. Snyder, and Grand Secretary I. R. Gage of Freemont, Nebraska. Charter members included W. H. Horton, I. N. Horton, J. W. Slutts, J. W. Sogan, William Sullavan, Martin Stevens, S. R. Jolly, W. S. Campbell, C. D. McAffee, George Osborn and R. H. Pough. Royal Neighbor Camp 1755 was organized at Lebanon on July 12, 1899, by the district deputy of that area with 30 members. Mrs. Eliza D. Watts was serving the Society as Supreme Oracle and Mrs. Winnie Fielder was Supreme Recorder. The charter members of the camp were Neighbors: William Abbott, Jennie Bodwell, Vena Bodwell, Mamie Campbell, George and Mary Cress, Ira and Martha Cumming, Sarah S. Cutts, J. S. and Lucilia Daffer, Eva and Sarah DeVoe, Sarah Huntzinger, Maggie Johnson, Fannie and John C. Kinkaid, Maria McCarthy, Francis Pelton, James and Melissa Porter, Ada Soverns, Louisa Staples, Cordelia Stevens, Delia Warner, Anna Waterman, Kate Waugh. Sarah Widener, and George and Margaret Yarnell. Hope Chapter number 243, Order of Eastern Star was instituted Feb. 12, 1912 and chartered May 14,1913. Constituted at Lebanon. June 12,1913 with Mrs. Mamie Campbell as the first Worthy Matron, and Mr. Marion J. Walters as the first Worthy Patron. The lodge hall was above the Farmers and Merchants Bank building on the west side of the street. Other charter members were Clyde Bodwell, Fannie Bodwell, Leone Boyd, Thomas Boyd. Mamie Campbell. R. B. Campbell. Kate DeMay. Anna Ingram, Alia McCarty. Ilah McCarty. J. E. McCarty. Duane McCarty, Marie McCarty. E. M. McCarty, Nettie Naden. Susie A. Null. Edith Austin. H. A. Austin. Isaac Orr, Annie M. Pennington, L. Estella Robinson. Maggie Sandon. D. F. Schwab, Julia A. Schwab, M. J. Walters and Nora Walters. Hope chapter continued to meet in Lebanon until fire destroyed the chapter room in 1939. They then moved to the old town hall in Danbury. When the new Masonic Temple was built in 1949, Hope Chapter again moved — for the last time — as all meetings since have been held there. |
